Bringing the Policy Back In: A Substantive Agenda for the New European Union

Can a strong set of policy ideas help bring the EU back on track?

The demise of the constitutional treaty and the Lisbon treaty leave the EU with something of crisis on its hands. An overemphasis on constitutional arrangements have marginalised debate on the proper role of EU policies in times of increasing global uncertainty. So where is the European Union’s policy programme going in 2009? Can an effective EU policy programme help secure the EU’s long-term future?

This conference pushes forward new ideas on shaping a robust EU policy framework for the future. Leading experts from business, politics, the media and academia assess the challenges facing the EU’s policy-makers, and sketch out scenarios for taking Europe forward.

Located at the interface between academic research and policy practice, the European Research Institute at the University of Birmingham flagship is a leading player in shaping policy ideas for the future. This cutting edge flagship conference in 2009 will address the future scope and reach of key EU policy areas in the following areas: Energy and Climate Change, the EU’s Role in the World, Migration, Social and Welfare Standards across the EU, Reform of the Single Market and Expanding the Euro area.
